Let your voice be heard

Dear Editor:”All it takes for evil to triumph in the world is enough good people to do nothing.” – Edmund BurkeVoter participation in America is among the lowest among nations which hold elections. When one considers the long, hard and courageous struggle for the right to vote, especially for women and blacks, it is difficult to understand the apathy which keeps voters away from today’s elections. The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee offers these thoughts: “Think for a minute. If you don’t pay your taxes, you are a tax evader. If you run away from military duty, you are a deserter. Toss a gum wrapper to the ground, you’re a litterbug. But if you sit on your right to vote, you’re just part of the majority. Today it is normal not to vote.”This apathy is indefensible, especially when the outcome of this fall’s election will have a major impact, not just in the United States, but in the world. We all owe it to those who earned the right for everyone to vote, regardless of race, creed or sex, to make sure new, young voters and all who are indifferent know how important it is to exercise this right. We need to change the direction of this great country, help to make it what it could be, be proud again of being an American and re-establish respect and not be so hated in the rest of the world.Let your voice be heard! Vote in November!Marian PerregauxCarbondale
