Let new council make the call

(This letter was originally addressed to Aspen Mayor Helen Klandered and the Aspen City Council.)Dear Editor:With the election of two new councilmen and a new mayor, I believe it is now appropriate, and in the best interests of the citizens of Aspen, for the current council to refer the Lodge At Aspen Mountain approval to the new council. This is a project that has been in the approval processs for four years. It has been reduced, reworked and redesigned. It is supported by its neighbors, has received the unanimous approval of the city P&Z and ringing endoresements from city staff and local environmental organizations. The Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously agreed the project is exceptional as defined in the city code! The developers are now in the process of pulling permits for 14 condos which had previously been approved for the site. If that is the only option left to them, that means no new high speed Lift 1A (paid for by the developers), no new 54 units of affordable housing for 108 people, no new public parking, no new public meeting spaces and no large annual donation to local charites based on $1 for every occupied room night, among many other benefits to the city. Please do the right thing. Allow the new council the opportunity to review the project in the light of the new energy of the new council members and mayor.Thank you for your consideration.David LaughrenAspen
