Let it grow

Dear Editor:

It goes without saying that the beauty and serenity that encompasses our daily lives, here in Aspen, has an incredible effect on our psyche, allowing us the intangible luxury of living and leading the best possible lifestyle imaginable. Anywhere.

I have one bone to pick, however, and I wonder if other like-minded aesthetic freaks also find the town’s visual appeal slipping a tad.

Lack of attention to sign regulation is one of my pet peeves. Another is the total nightmare of mismatched, hodgepodged holiday lights that seem to have been thrown on the trees of downtown by a windstorm – with no sense of visual balance or color harmony. (Thank you, Hotel Jerome, for finally getting your outdoor lights back to the nice, soft white mini-lights that make the most sophisticated, magical and inviting statement).

I know my next comment will be upsetting to most, but, I must admit, even though it’s faux, Disneylandesque façade is un-appealing to Aspenites, Vail surpasses us, embarrassingly so, when it comes to flower plantings and holiday visual lighting and decor.

Snowmass Village and downtown Carbondale are excellent examples for the city of Aspen’s lighting team to follow, when it comes to creating simple, elegant, magical, warm and non-offensive ambiance. Please do the lights with a sense of consistency next winter.

Finally, with glorious spring now doing her dance, I challenge Aspen businesses and residents to roll up their sleeves, break out the garden tools, spend a little money and plant tons of flowers! (Have you seen the town of Vail’s flower planters in the summer? Wow.)

Flower Power, baby.
