Lemonade Day helps kids learn business, giving

Children all over the Roaring Fork Valley will have lemonade stands set up today for Lemonade Day.

Lemonade Day is a nationwide program for children to learn about what it takes to run a business. The Buddy Program runs it in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Buddy Program Executive Director Dan Houggy said this is the fourth year of running Lemonade Day in the valley. Every year, about 400 children register to take part, he said.



The children, who range from ages 6 to 18, find someone to invest in their lemonade stand. They repay the investor through sales.

“We encourage the kids to spend some, save some and share some,” Houggy said.




It’s up to the children what they do with the money, but Houggy said 25 percent of the profits goes to a charity of the child’s choice. Some even decide to open an account with Alpine Bank to see how that works.

“Some kids show up with elaborate stands and organic lemonade, and some show up with concrete blocks and wood,” Houggy said. “They learn about competition and the free markets and how it works.”

The Buddy Program through Lemonade Day wants youngsters to start thinking about careers, their future and making money, Houggy said.

“We want to give kids a purpose. It gives them a reason to want to be in school,” Houggy said.

Sunlight Mountain Resort postpones opening day
