Kickoff party for Quiznos cycling event set in Aspen

ASPEN – A kick-off party for the Quiznos Pro Challenge professional cycling event, which rolls into Aspen on Aug. 24, will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday at the Limelight Lodge, 355 S. Monarch St.

Aspen is one of the host cities for the cycling tour, which takes place in Colorado from Aug. 22-28. Aspen will host the finish of the Queen Stage on Aug. 24 after the racers ride over two mountain passes from Gunnison.

Sixteen teams with as many as 128 professional cyclists will compete. Ten of the top teams in the world have been confirmed for the inaugural event, including Olympic gold medalist Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland, veteran racer Stuart O’Grady of Australia and 2008 World Cycling Championships silver medalist Svein Tuft of Canada.

The purpose of the party is to share ideas for how the community can get involved in the inaugural event. Aspen Mayor Mick Ireland will provide an outline the race and some of the plans for race week.
