Keep the beauty, lose the crap

Dear Editor:

In response to “Preserve our Victorian character,” I just would like to add my opinion (letters, Feb. 11).

Everyone, I know it is cliche to do this, but try and look 10 years into the future. Think of how Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley will be in 10, 20 and possibly 50 years. What will it consist of?

Do you see four story buildings for Prada and Gucci, the Starbucks across from a Starbucks? Do you see the employee’s commute on a five-lane freeway stretching from Rifle to Aspen? Do you see a surplus of multimillion-dollar homes collecting dust 363 days a year?

Hopefully I live to see such days, but if I do, I’d rather see booming forests, clear rivers, wildlife, and hopefully some mountains behind the buildings.

Maybe, just maybe, our elected officials have an interest in preserving a historic and nature filled Roaring Fork, or maybe they just want a fat paycheck while drinking stiff martinis. I’d rather pay taxes to keep our beautiful valley, not to fill it with fancy yet crappy clothing stores.
