KDNK offers chance at gonzo memorabilia

John Colson

The moment has arrived for those interested in scoring some Hunter S. Thompson memorabilia and supporting Carbondale’s community-access radio station, KDNK.The station already has begun its 2005 Labor of Love online auction on its Web site, kdnk.org, and from Nov. 28 through Dec. 3, will conduct the on-air version of the same fund-raising effort. And this year’s selection of auction items includes a scattering of Thompson-related paraphernalia, said the station’s development director, Amy Kimberly. She noted that Thompson was a member of the station and has donated autographed copies of his books to the auction in the past. Thompson shot himself to death at his home in Woody Creek on Feb. 23.Among the Gonzo-related offerings, she said, there are a couple of memorial banners, sporting the famed Gonzo logo (a double-thumbed fist clutching a green peyote button) that hung at the Owl Farm grounds during the Aug. 20 memorial blast-off of the late writer’s ashes. The banners are signed and dated by Thompson’s widow, Anita, who will be on hand as a guest auctioneer on Nov. 29, as will Ann Owsley, proprietor of the Woody Creek Store. Also on sale are copies of Thompson’s best-known work, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” stamped with the “Owl Farm Library” logo; peacock-feather bookmarks (Thompson kept pet peacocks at the farm); and a portrait of Thompson by celebrity photographer Lynn Goldsmith. In addition, the Woody Creek Store is donating a dinner for 18, catered by longtime Thompson friends George and Patty Stranahan, with Gaylord Guenin, mayor of Lenado, serving as bartender, Woody Creek Tavern owner Shep Harris serving the opening shots of tequila and Kevin Doyle of the Woody Creek Cellars serving wine with the meal.KDNK is at 88.1 on the FM dial, and more information is available at kdkn.org or by calling 963-0139.
