EAGLE, Colo. – A kayaker died after his boat overturned on the Eagle River on Saturday, according to the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office.

The 911 call came in just before 2:30 p.m. after the kayaker – who was boating with two friends – overturned near the Eagle County Fairgrounds. The kayaker was pulled from the river approximately one mile downstream by good Samaritans, authorities said. The kayaker was wearing a life preserver and helmet.

The name of the victim will be released by the Eagle County coroner pending family notification.

The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, Vail Mountain Rescue, Greater Eagle Fire Protection District, Gypsum Fire Protection District, and the Western Eagle County Ambulance District assisted with rescue operations.

The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office continues to urge people to use extra caution in and around the valley’s waterways as the high runoff continues.
