BASALT ” Bill Kane has been hired as Basalt’s town manager, Mayor Leroy Duroux announced Friday.

Kane, a familiar face in Aspen, will replace Bill Efting, who departs Feb. 20. Efting has accepted the city administrator post in the Front Range town of Dacano. Kane starts March 9 “but will begin transition meetings with Efting immediately,” according to a statement from the town government.

Kane is currently a principal with Design Workshop in Aspen. He has held some relatively high-profile positions in Aspen. Kane was planning director for the city of Aspen and Pitkin County from 1974 to 1978. He was vice president of planning for the Aspen Skiing Co. from 1996 to 2005. Between those jobs, he worked at Design Workshop.

Kane was selected over two other finalists. There were 24 applicants for the post. Duroux cited the “need for a generalist manager with experience in land use issues as a critical determinant in making the choice by town officials,” according to the statement from the town government.

See Saturday’s Aspen Times for more on Kane’s selection.
