Just try keeping the public informed

Dear Editor:

Tom McCabe’s guest opinion piece responding to my Aspen Times letter on Feb. 5 simply proves the point (“Catching cheaters a long process,” Feb. 8). Despite an impressive amount of reporting to government authorities, the public at large is left to searching “public records” or the housing authority website for information about affordable housing compliance. He is entirely correct that the website has relevant materials and does provide a measure of explanation. It is well organized, useful and also places in historical context an on-going problem he touches on ” insufficient staff.

Compliance efforts require a pro-active approach with the entire community supporting the housing authority. It is not about being defensive as the tone of McCabe’s writing suggests, but more about properly apprising citizens periodically that the program is being properly managed and has the necessary resources to do the job. It should not take a letter to the editor to trigger information. Why not simply cut and paste the updated data from the website from time to time into a similar guest opinion? That way the populous will gain an overt sense that the system is working and/or needs additional resources.
