Junior hockey swarming over ice in Aspen
Junior hockey players from throughout Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico convened in Aspen again last weekend for the 21st annual Aspen Fall Faceoff hockey tournament.
The tournament actually kicked off the previous weekend with 32 teams in various age groups playing at the Aspen Ice Garden and the Lewis Ice Arena at the Aspen Recreation Center (ARC).
Last weekend, 32 more junior hockey teams from the West teams gathered for tournament play in Aspen.
The Aspen Pee Wee A Leafs won the tournament championship in their division with five consecutive wins in three days.
The team completed its mission with a 4-2 victory over the Colorado Springs Junior Tigers in the championship game Sunday afternoon.
The Leafs outscored their opponents 21-3 in dominating the competition.
Goaltender Larkin Dolan registered three shutout victories.
Quinn Langley led the team and tournament with 7 points (7 goals).
Brooks Bond finished second on the team with 6 points, leading the team and tournament with 4 assists.
Ben O’Brien recorded 5 points (3 goals, 2 assists), and defenseman Jack Pevny notched 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists).
In pool play, Aspen defeated the Summit Lightning 3-0, the Utah Golden Eagles 5-0, the Littleton Hawks 3-1, and Arvada 6-0.
In the final game, Boden Haber and Langley put Aspen up 2-0 in the first period.
Dane Whiston scored the game-winner after taking advantage of a Colorado Springs turnover late in the second period.
Fisher Scott finished the scoring.
The win reversed the outcome of a year ago when the Junior Tigers beat the Aspen Pee Wee A Team in the championship game.
But this year Aspen reversed the final outcome to take the tournament title.
The third weekend of the annual Fall Faceoff is scheduled for Friday through Sunday in Aspen with girls hockey teams in U19, U14 and U12 divisions.
Girls hockey games are scheduled at the Aspen Ice Garden and the Lewis Ice Arena in the Aspen Recreation CenterT
