Judge stays lawsuit challenging Christo project

DENVER – A federal judge is pausing a lawsuit challenging the artist Christo’s plan to suspend huge fabric panels over parts of the Arkansas River.
The judge said Thursday that he is staying a lawsuit filed by Rags Over the Arkansas River, or ROAR, while an appeals board of the Department of the Interior also considers the matter. He rejected the Bureau of Land Management’s request to dismiss the lawsuit.
ROAR contends the BLM violated environmental laws in granting Christo a permit for his Over the River project.
Christo’s team still needs to obtain a couple of local permits to construct it. The team has said they will be taking several steps to mitigate impacts of the project. It would be displayed for two weeks in August 2015 at the earliest.
