Aspen native Joseph W. Popish passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 10, 2009, surrounded by his family. He was 84 years old.

He was born on July 11, 1924, in Aspen to Primosh and Jennie (Vedic) Popish. He attended Pitkin County High School and graduated in 1942. During his teenage years, until entering the military, he worked in the Smuggler and Midnight mines. He served in the 4th Naval Construction Battalion in the Asiatic Pacific from June 1943 through March 1946.

He married Barbara Jean Hauth on Oct. 4, 1952, and they lived in Aspen. He worked as a plumber until his retirement. He also served as a volunteer fireman in Aspen for many years. He was an avid trout fisherman all of his life. After retirement, he and Barbara moved to Carbondale in 1986.

Joe is survived by sons Edward of Rome, Italy, and Tony (Sally) of Carbondale; grandsons Kyle of Carbondale and Danny (Sarah) of Basalt; brothers Martin (Dolores) of California and Louis of Basalt; sister Lillian Dalton of Basalt, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, his parents and brothers Bernard and Edward.

He will be missed by all who loved him. Services are Saturday, May 16 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Crown in Carbondale.
