Joan Vill of Snowmass Village passed away at Hospice of Saint John in Lakewood on April 15 with her family at her side. She was 78.

She was born on Jan 26, 1932 in New York City to John Barry and Veronica Troll Barry.

Joan graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y. with a bachelor’s degree in merchandising in 1953. While there, she met Carl who was attending a neighboring Engineering College. Later they married, while he was serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy.

Joan came to Snowmass as a visitor in 1991 from Mendham, N.J. As the years passed, she spent more time each year in Snowmass Village until she and her husband became full-time residents in 2007.

Joan was a loving wife, a loving mother and grandmother. She gave back to the community in many ways. She had a long history of helping recovering alcoholics and used her own life experiences to support others.

While living in Japan with Carl, Joan found her greatest earthly reward. She was able to kiss Saint “to be” Mother Teresa who was visiting the Franciscan Missionary parish in Tokyo, Japan where Joan was a member of the parish.

She is survived by her husband, Carl of 55 years; four children, Cathy Williams, David Vill, Carolyn Holman and Christine Voldrich; 13 grandchildren, Matthew, Kaley, Samantha, Morgan, Nicole, Nolan, Hunter, Layla, Barri, Kyle, Autumn, Chase and Blake; sister, Veronica Flanagan and brother, John Barry both of Crossville, Tenn.

A funeral Mass will be held for Joan at St. Mary’s in Aspen on June 25 at 10 a.m. All family and friends are invited to attend this celebration of our beloved Joan.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested contributions to either Hospice of Saint John or their favorite charity. Tribute to Joan’s memory can be sent to Hospice of Saint John; 1320 Everett Court; Lakewood, CO, 80215 Attention: Bobby Alvarado.
