Aspen native Asia Jenkins will get a chance to improve on her 13th-place finish in skiercross at Winter X Games Nine. On Tuesday, Jenkins’ name was included in the second wave of athletes ESPN picked to compete at Winter X Games 10, which returns to Buttermilk for the fifth consecutive year Jan. 28-31.Jenkins, a pilates and yoga instructor at the Aspen Club and Spa, made her Winter X debut in 2000 at Mount Snow, Vt., where she finished fifth in skiercross. According to a press release from ESPN, a sport-specific selection committee chooses the athletes to invite to Winter X Games 10. A third wave of athlete invitations is scheduled for release in the middle of January, the press release stated.Jenkins is the eighth local athlete to receive a Winter X Games 10 invitation. She joins Carbondale’s Peter Olenick (skiing slopestyle, skiing superpipe), Basalt’s Jason Smith (boardercross), Aspen’s Casey Puckett (skiercross), Snowmass Village’s Christian Mosiman (boardercross) Carbondale’s Ross Trulove (boardercross), Snowmass Village’s Jordan Karlinski (boardercross) and Snowmass Village’s Gretchen Bleiler (snowboard superpipe).Jenkins, 28, grew up ski racing in Aspen, then competed on the ski team at Western State in Gunnison. Aside from skiercross, she has had success in 24-hour skiing competitions, as well as big-mountain events.
