Jazz Aspen bash set to kick off year 2000

Aspen Times Staff Report

It’s not too early to start making plans for those who want to get the 21st century off on a jazzy note.

Jazz Aspen Snowmass has announced its plans for a major bash for the turn of the millennium. Jazz Aspen will kick off the year 2000 – its 10th anniversary season – with a New Year’s Eve jazz party on the ballroom level of the St. Regis Aspen hotel.

The party, dubbed Artists for the New Millennium, will include 10 bands, playing a variety of styles, from swing to Dixieland to Latin to blues. The lineup of bands will include 10 young acts marked for stardom in the coming century. The party, which will feature continuous music from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., will feature dance music in the main ballroom area and five separate themed club rooms, including 52nd Street, Beale Street, Little Havana and the French Quarter. Beverages and gourmet food round out the evening.

The benefit event will initiate a 10th anniversary campaign to expand Jazz Aspen’s education programs for jazz and American music in the Roaring Fork Valley. Proceeds will benefit Jazz Aspen’s Thelonious Monk Institute Jazz Colony, as well as three new programs: a Jazz Aspen High School Big Band, a Roaring Fork Valley in-school education program, and a national band director’s institute to train public school teachers in jazz education.

Tickets for the event will go on sale June 1. Ticket purchases will be partially tax deductible.
