Jack offers a calm, levelheaded approach

Dear Editor:Sadly, speculation has become as much a part of Aspen as our altitude. Think of past bubbles burst: savings & loan; dot.com; 9/11; the current mortgage crisis and resulting credit crunch; Madoff victims there will be more to come, just as surely as many low-landers succumb to altitude sickness in Aspen. This is a global recession, not caused by our fine Mayor Mick Ireland. These are challenging days for many.Councilman Jack Johnson eloquently points out that although Aspens economics rise and fall, our core problems remain the same: growth and the character of Aspen, employee housing, traffic and the environment.Jacks calm and levelheaded approach to the current crisis is a welcome relief from the knee-jerk reactions that brought us some bad projects to fix the last economic downturn. A number of the current crop of City Council candidates seem to think that through City Council they can quickly immunize Aspen to the vagaries of national and international economic turmoil. Jack Johnson is the only council candidate who seems to even know what the Aspen Area Community Plan is. He will work to maintain real vitality here.I will be voting for Jack on City Council on May 5.Jesse BoyceAspen
