`I’ve been a good dog, Santa’

Even pets, it appears, behave well at Christmas time.

Four-legged creatures had an opportunity to meet Santa Claus yesterday during the Pet Portraits with Santa fund-raiser at the C.B. Paws pet accessory boutique on the Hyman Avenue Mall.

By midday Sunday, some 50 pooches posed with Santa (Hale Harmon of Aspen donned the Santa outfit), generating close to $1,000 that will go to the Aspen Animal Hospital for the spaying and neutering pets, according to Kimberly Natalini, owner of C.B. Paws. Pet owners were asked to make a $20 donation, she said.

“One dog was terrified of me,” Harmon said. “Others were scared at first, but then we gave `em some treats and they sweetened right up.”

Harmon, who donned the classic garb of Old Saint Nick for the first time yesterday, said he was happy to start with animals, as opposed to children.

“I love dogs, so it’s been a lot of fun,” he said. “But it’s too hot, though.”

Fortunately for Harmon, local Pat Scanlan, another Santa first-timer, was there to relieve him at about 1 p.m.

Natalini said she hopes to continue the fund-raiser, now in its second year.

“This year we haven’t had any cats though, but it’s still early,” she said. “Last year we had four, and one bird, and a total of 80 dogs.”
