Ittner outpaces Clapper in fundraising in Pitkin County commissioner campaign

Incumbent Pitkin County Commissioner Rob Ittner leads challenger Patti Clapper by almost $1,000 in the battle for contributions leading up to the Nov. 4 election for the District 1 seat.

Ittner, who is running unaffiliated, submitted his report of contributions and expenditures with the Pitkin County clerk and recorder on Tuesday; he raised $6,200 during the reporting period of July 20 through Oct. 9.

The report for Clapper, the Democratic candidate, was turned in Friday, showing she drew $5,220 during the same cycle.

Both candidates spent a small portion of their funds during the period. Of the $160.25 spent by Ittner, $40 went to public-access station GrassRoots TV for digital copies and the remaining $120.25 to PayPal for credit-card processing. Clapper spent $476.52, with $254.80 toward postage, $190 for yard signs and $31.72 for business cards.

Among Ittner's contributors were former Hotel Jerome owner Dick Butera ($200), Pitkin County Republican Party Chairwoman Frieda Wallison ($200), Aspen Times columnist Melanie Sturm ($250) and Aspen real estate agent Karen Setterfield ($500).

"I think he's a great businessperson," said Ruth Kruger, a commercial property broker who once ran for Aspen mayor. Kruger gave $100 to Ittner's campaign.

One contributor to Clapper's campaign, Aspen resident Steve Goldenberg, showed that not all voters are letting party affiliation dictate their decisions.

Goldberg, a Republican, gave $100 to Clapper's war chest.

"I'm a Republican, and she's a Democrat, but we have a strong personal relationship," he said.

Aspen poet and writer Bruce Berger wrote a $200 check to Clapper's campaign. He said that Clapper, who served three terms as county commissioner before being term-limited out of office, better suits his vision of Aspen.

"It basically has to do with development and the fact that Ittner supports growth for growth's sake, in my opinion, without taking into account Aspen's own character," Berger said. "And Patti very much more takes in Aspen's own nature and history as a small town and a special one that's oriented to nature and the arts."

The candidates' next campaign finance report is due Oct. 31 and will cover the Oct. 10 through 26 cycle.
