It’s about fairness

Dear Editor:I had the privilege of serving as a member and also the chairman of the Eagle County Home Rule Commission. At its heart, the charter is all about improved fairness in districting and representation. Other benefits are expanding citizen rights through an initiative and referendum process, an ethics code and attendance and voting record accountability report. There has been a small vocal group of anti-charter opponents that, on this side of the county, have made groundless assertions that the charter would be bad. None of their claims are true (visit http://www.homerulefacts.com). Citizens for Home Rule has done a lot of work on public education of the issues, and we’ve found that when people actually take a few minutes to understand home rule, they see the value in expanding the board of commissioners and providing better representation to all Eagle County residents and especially those in the Roaring Fork Valley. If you’re an Eagle County resident in the Basalt and El Jebel area, I strongly encourage you to vote yes for home rule. A strong response from the far western part of the county could prove to be the tipping point in this special election. If you believe you are a registered voter, but did not receive a ballot, call the Eagle County El Jebel office at 704-2700 and they’ll be able to assist you with voting information.Don CohenEdwards
