It’ll never happen

Patch, patch, patch. For the past 25 years Pitkin County has been busy fixing its land use code. The public notice section of The Times regularly records these zoning changes. But no one ever asks, “If it ain’t broke, why fix it?”

Are endless changes in zoning the way to control growth as defined in the Aspen/Pitkin County Growth Management Policy Plan? This might be debated by the candidates running for an open seat on the BOCC on the November ballot.

But that will never happen. The county’s growth managers are in denial that growth controls have produced more problems than they have solved.

It’s budget time in the county. This might give the BOCC candidates the opportunity to determine if growth is being managed so that it pays its own way in public costs. That won’t happen.

It never has paid off in 25 years. In fact, annual reports evaluating the track record of the county’s comprehensive growth management plan were so embarrassing that the county stopped publishing them long ago.

The county’s November election might be an opportunity for the candidates to discuss the unintended consequences of zoning and how they could be fixed. Forget it. The BOCC is too smart to admit our mistakes and too dumb to learn from them.

Another question for debate is why the majority of voters has put up with 25 years of name calling and mud wrestling county politics. A polarized community with poor morale is not a whole lot of help as we try to get our resort’s down in the dumps economy up and going and growing again.

Let the BOCC election campaign games begin.

Be Brave Comrades.
