Irresponsible leadership

(This letter was originally addressed to Aspen City Councilman Terry Paulson.)

On behalf of some 25 citizen volunteers who served as the Infill Advisory Group for some 18 months – June 2000 to the end of 2001 – I take umbrage on your 12th hour rejection of the entire scope of the group’s recommendations to implement prior city goals as set forth in the Aspen Area Community Area Plan.

In January 2001, the group appeared before City Council – at which meeting you were present in your role as council member – to present our preliminary thoughts, requesting conceptual approval of our proposal progress.

We received unanimous encouragement, with no objection from you, and therefore continued in our deliberations in many further meetings before finalizing our program.

We on the committee certainly anticipated debate and compromise at public hearings on our recommendations, but your belated posture of rejection of the entire infill concept with an “I don’t know” alternative, after being part of the council encouragement of 2001, makes fools of all of us – in having wasted valuable personal time in Aspen’s interest.

You certainly have had full knowledge as to the infill group proposals for at least the following two years in order to develop and express your own ideas.

You have exhibited abject and irresponsible leadership. Shame on you!
