Ironic picture choice

It’s ironic that you chose to run a photo of the Coal Seam fire with your Dec. 4 article on President Bush’s signing of the Healthy Forests Restoration Act, considering that its sponsor, Rep. Scott McInnis, has admitted that its provisions wouldn’t have prevented the Coal Seam fire.

The act will do little to prevent fires that damage life and property, nor will it improve forest health. Wildfire and forest health were just fig leaves for a law that is really just about allowing more logging of backcountry areas ” where fire is generally beneficial and doesn’t threaten humans ” and making it harder for the public to comment on proposed timber sales and road building.
