Travelers wanting to use Independence Pass in the next few weeks should be prepared for delays as crew do rockfall mitigation work east of Aspen, the Colorado Department of Transportation said Friday.

While there will be one-lane closures for the weekdays in September, Highway 82 to the pass will be closed completely on Sept. 30 and possibly Oct. 1, according to a CDOT new release sent Friday afternoon. There will also be full closures in October.

One lane between mile markers 59 and 62 will close with alternating traffic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting Tuesday and weekdays over the month of September, CDOT said.

After the Sept. 30 daylong closure, “full weekday closures are planned in early and mid-October as a helicopter will be used to install rock netting. The schedule is subject to change due to weather and other factors,” CDOT said.  CDOT is urging motorists to use alternate routes during the single-lane and full closures.
