Independence Pass closed again

Aspen Times Staff

Highway 82 over Independence Pass is again closed due to adverse weather conditions.

The route, east of Aspen, reopened Wednesday, after the Colorado Department of Transportation closed off the pass Tuesday morning due to hazardous winter conditions.

It is scheduled to close for the winter on Nov. 7; this is the third time this fall that road conditions have forced CDOT to gate the pass ahead of that target date. A permanent closure for the season can come at any time, but today’s closure is temporary, according to CDOT. The pass could reopen Saturday or Sunday, when the snow clears, the agency said this morning.

The gates were shut shortly before 9 a.m. today.
