In support of the Healthy Community Fund

Dear Editor:On Nov. 7 we’ll all have the opportunity to make our best investment of the year. Here in Pitkin County we’ll be able to vote on Question 1A and support the Healthy Community Fund. Being on the board of directors for YouthZone, I can say from experience that state and federal funding for nonprofits has dramatically been reduced in the last five years. Pitkin County’s nonprofit organizations have had to put a great deal of energy into fundraising. By voting yes on 1A, a very small amount of our property taxes will go a long way, supporting our local nonprofits that do so much to improve the quality of life for those in the community who need a helping hand.In 2006, 42 different nonprofits were supported by the Healthy Community Fund. These local nonprofits fill needs in our community that are so vital, and they perform these services in a cost effective way. By voting YES on 1A, you’ll have the chance to make a big investment in our community, one that will produce huge dividends in the future.Bruce BenjaminEmma
