In defense of Malone

Dear Editor:Bill Wallen’s recent letter (Aspen Times, April 16) regarding Dee Malone’s candidacy missed the mark. Burlingame proponents have taken to characterizing any opposition as “anti-affordable housing,” thereby attempting to reframe the debate. This enables them to avoid answering specific questions about costs and impacts. Dee Malone and those of us supporting her candidacy are not opposed to employee housing, but feel that Burlingame is not the appropriate place for what is being proposed. It is a fragile ecological site which may be saved by looking for alternatives. There is no thought to terminating the city’s affordable housing program – what an absurd idea. As a 45-year resident of Aspen, I have never been opposed to affordable housing, nor ever accused of such opposition. I don’t live in an exclusive neighborhood, nor have I ever or do I now live at the Aspen Club. Mr. Wallen seems a little confused about factual matters, and the argument about who has the deepest love for this town won’t be decided in letters to the editor.Burlingame is by no means the only issue in the current campaign. Regardless of the outcome of Burlingame, Dee Malone is thoughtful and insightful, and will represent all people and income levels equally.Carol Ann JacobsonAspen
