In Cheney’s words …

Aspen Times writer

Dear Editor:

(This letter was originally addressed to President Bush.)

“Well, you’ve done it again.”

You have poked the hornets’ nest again.

You have angered Muslims in general and al-Qaida in particular. And you have irritated Europeans and decent people everywhere with your endorsement of Israel’s plan to hold onto part of the West Bank.

This exposes your stance as an “honest broker” for peace as a fraud.

You have led us with lies and stupidity (I refer to the stupidity of pre-emptively attacking Iraq without a plan to provide security after crushing the Iraqi army and government), and the lies about WMDs and the al-Qaida presence.

Let me quote from a statement made after the first Iraq war by Dick Cheney, secretary of defense, in 1991. “Once you’ve got to Baghdad, it’s not clear what you do with it. It’s not clear what kind of government you would put in place of the one that’s currently there … How much credibility is that government going to have if it’s set up by the United States military when it’s there? … I think to have American military forces engaged in a civil war inside Iraq would fit the definition of quagmire, and we have absolutely no desire to get bogged down in that fashion.”

Please think about that and about a just peace in Israel/Palestine.
