Important volunteer work

Dear Editor:

I would like to publicly extend congratulations to the Rotary Club of Carbondale/Aspen Glen for being honored with the Rotary International Significant Achievement Award for 2007-08. Their vision and efforts on behalf of the children served by Childhelp River Bridge Center in Garfield County is an inspiration.

Their initial and continued financial and volunteer support for the services Childhelp River Bridge Center provides to sexually abused children in our community has been recognized as “the very best work in their district and the Rotary world.” The Aspen Glen Rotary Club has made a significant impact on the lives of the 115 children and their families who have walked through our doors since opening last December. As long as child sexual abuse remains a hidden but significant problem in our community we will need help. As long as one in four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused before reaching their 18th birthday, we will need help.

We as adults are responsible for protecting our children from this significant risk; we continue to be grateful for their dedicated service and thank them many times over.
