Imperialism gaining credibility

Dear Editor:(Re: Bob Herbert, “The real enemy is staring right at us,” column, July 13.)Herbert writes that the war in Iraq has fanned the hatred of the U.S. among Muslims around the world. That’s an understatement. In response to 9/11, we have taken the tack that, because Osama bin Laden is a madman and members of his al-Qaida network are Muslims who cannot be defeated militarily, we are perfectly justified in going after another madman and his Muslim nation, who can be targeted militarily. After all, they were both pursuing a way of life so outrageously different from our own that we felt threatened enough to do something about it.In light of such a hopelessly undifferentiated Middle East policy, have we not just given the myth of American imperialism its most credible underpinnings?Joel Brence M.D.Aspen
