Immigration agency hosts forum

Three officers with the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) will participate in a public forum this Thursday concerning the federal organization’s new five-agent office scheduled to open this fall in Glenwood Springs.

The bilingual educational forum will be held at the Carbondale Town Hall, Thursday, July 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend the meeting; immigrants and employers of immigrants are particularly encouraged to attend.

The supervisor of the new Glenwood Springs office, as well as two Denver-based INS agents, will be on hand to discuss the role the new office will play in the greater Roaring Fork Valley. The INS officials will also be available to answer questions the public may have about the new INS presence in the area.

The new Glenwood Springs INS office is expected to be staffed with three agents and two detention officers when it opens in September. According to INS officials, the new office will be one of six to open across Colorado, increasing the INS presence statewide by 30 officers. An October 1998 congressional action mandated the new offices, in order to provide better service to communities where the agency has not had a physical presence in the past. Presently, the closest INS office to the Roaring Fork Valley is in Grand Junction.

In March, an INS agent told The Aspen Times that the Glenwood Springs office will “address problems like smugglers who bring illegal aliens in, document vendors who sell them documents, and employers who hire them knowing that they are illegal aliens,” and not deportation.

INS officials stressed that the new Glenwood Springs office will not conduct raids in order to round up illegal aliens.

Thursday’s educational forum is sponsored by Asistencia Para Latinos and the Latino Networking Council. For further information, contact Asistencia at 945-4060.
