If you need the answer now …

Dear Editor:

It’s no wonder the voters are confused and concerned.

City Council is saying that they are looking at the museum vote as merely an authorization to begin negotiations.

The art museum is saying that the project is “shovel ready” for construction.

Council says that they do not see this vote as a “mandate” to strike a deal, but merely permission to explore.

The art museum is saying that they must move fast as funding will be uncertain if they don’t have an answer right away and acquire the land. Yet the council is saying that there will be a long public process before there is an answer.

Council is saying “trust us to do the right thing” (despite their track record).

The council and the Aspen Art Museum are sending the public conflicting messages.

Are they ready to begin construction, or ready to begin negotiations and exploration? Which is it?

For those of us who do want to see the museum built, but with the right public process, it is forcing us into a horrible position. Remember what your mom used to say when you demanded an answer before she had time to consider your request? “If you have to have an answer right this minute, the answer is ‘no.'”
