If music be the food…

Dear Editor:Every year at this time, Chris “Biff” Phillips can be found running up and down the valley, “harvesting,” as he says, forms for the Battle of the Bands, now in its ninth year. Biff and Dan Sadowsky work like beavers so that our children can have this amazing forum for their music – this year, 30 bands in six hours. It is a testament to the quality of this event that John Oates will also be featured. Over the years, this Biff ‘n’ Dan business (otherwise known as the National Jam Foundation) has raised in excess of $23,000, every soul of which goes back into the music programs in the schools represented. It takes many volunteer hours and a headache of organization to bring this thing together, but for 7-year-old boys like Obadiah Tones, my son, back in 2001, this was the start of a rock ‘n’ roll dream, as it has been for other small people and for raging teenagers alike. We owe Biff and Dan, the National Jam Foundation, and the town of Basalt a huge thank-you for their work and their vision. This is the kind of investment in the future we should be all making. Music transcends politics and religion, is international, multilingual; there is nothing that speaks louder. So, take a ride to downtown Basalt between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday, May 19. You might just be surprised by the quality of the music these youngsters are turning out.Claire McDougallWoody Creek
