‘IditaREAD’ a success

Dear Editor:I would like to thank everyone who made the “IditaREAD” Sled Dog Race and Book Collection such a success. With the help of the mushers and spectators, we collected 285 children’s books at the weekend race. They will be donated to various valley reading programs, classrooms and hospitals. The books were deposited in a dogsled that has actually done the Iditarod sled dog race in Alaska. The sled once belonged to Dr. Terry Atkins, a veterinarian and veteran Iditarod musher who has conducted seminars for the area sled dog clubs on nutrition, dog health and welfare. Last weekend, spectators and volunteers were not only treated to the excitement of canine athletes doing what they love, but also interacting with the mushers and the dogs in the parking area. Many of the competitors in the Colorado Mountain Musher Club are kids (8 to 15 years old). They love to teach others what they have learned about dog training and share the love of their sport and canine friends. The mushers from Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and Arizona enjoyed the trail, the scenery and the hospitality of the Roaring Fork Valley. They fully supported the “IditaREAD” book collecting and look forward to the race as an annual event. Thanks again to all!Lise SansomAspen Country Day SchoolColorado Mountain Mushers Inc.
