Highway 133 south of the McClure Pass summit is expected to reopen to a single lane of alternating traffic at 5 p.m. today after a rockslide blocked the road Monday.

The single lane through the affected area will continue Wednesday and Thursday, and possibly all day Friday, as crews clear the debris, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

CDOT closed the highway about 16 miles north of Paonia yesterday after rocks came down directly across from the Paonia Reservoir dam at 5 p.m. No vehicle was caught; no one was hurt.

Highway 133 links Highway 82 at Carbondale to Highway 92 in Hotchkiss.

Motorists should expect delays of up to 30 minutes in the slide area, as traffic will be stopped periodically to allow the drilling and blasting of rocks. Crews will also be scaling the rock wall above the highway to knock down remaining loose material.

On Monday evening, CDOT cleared enough of the rock material away to let 20 to 30 waiting motorists through. The road was then closed and remained so through today so CDOT geologists could survey the area and assess the damage. Four or five large rocks came down, as well as smaller debris ” about 1,000 tons in all, according to initial estimates. The larger rocks must be drilled and blasted on the roadway in order to haul the pieces off in loaders, CDOT said.
