MEEKER ” The remains of Texas hunter missing since October have been found in a western Colorado wilderness area.

Walter Benskin, 53, of Santa Fe, Texas, disappeared Oct. 26, 2006 in the Flattops Wilderness Area, about 125 miles west of Denver.

Rio Blanco County Search and Rescue found his remains on Saturday, sheriff’s dispatcher Katie Hale said. He was found about a quarter-mile from a spot where a friend had discovered some of his personal belongings two days earlier amid indications he had tried to light a fire.

Authorities said Benskin had been hunting elk with a relative when they separated, planning to meet later. Benskin never returned to their camp, and about 2 feet of snow fell in the area that day.
