Fans of Hunter S. Thompson can rejoice as the Wheeler Opera House is hosting a concert preview of “The Untitled Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical” at 7:30 p.m. on April 11.
Developed by Joe Iconis and directed by Tony Award winner, Christopher Ashley, the musical will follow Thompson’s legacy from the 1940s until 2005 as he “invents Gonzo journalism, attempts to take down a corrupt president, and quests for equality for his fellow weirdos, outsiders and freaks,” according to the show’s description.
Thompson’s legacy in Aspen is most notably traced back to his 1970 run for Pitkin County sheriff. He was a Pitkin County resident from the late 1960s until his death in 2005.
San Diego Magazine has described the show as “an emotional passing of the torch” for future activists and a call for Thomspon’s revered freaks and misfits.
The Wheeler Opera House gallery next door will exhibit Thompson’s art alongside the concert itself, in collaboration with the Aspen Collective.
The show is set to run in full in Washington D.C. this summer. More information can be found at wheeleroperahouse.com and tickets can be purchased from aspenshowtix.com.
