Human remains found at Officer’s Gulch

Summit Daily Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

SUMMIT COUNTY – Human bones including a jaw – and other remains – discovered on the south side of Officer’s Gulch on Thursday afternoon are believed to be linked to a missing person report filed in August 2001 with authorities in Aurora, according to a release from Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

Hikers about 200 yards above the Tenmile Creek recreation path found parts of the remains and called 911. Members of the sheriff’s office Special Operations Division, Summit County Rescue Group and the Summit County coroner met the hikers near the bike path and found the jaw bone, along with other bones, some clothing and a backpack.

Two forms of identification found at the scene are believed to be linked to the Aurora Police Department’s missing person report.

Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson has not released the decedent’s name pending positive identification and notification of next of kin, according to the sheriff’s office.

The last human remains found on a trail in Sumit County occurred in the early 1990s, when a woman’s remains were found on the Meadow Creek trailhead in Frisco, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Paulette Horr.

“So it’s not something that happens very often,” she said.
