Aspen, CO ColoradoLongtime Aspen personality Howard Berg passed away from complications of pneumonia Thursday, Aug. 9, 2007, at University Hospital in Denver. Howard is survived by his beloved family – wife Kat of 20 years; son Gus; and two older brothers, Richard and Roger Berg.

Howard was born Oct. 22, 1945, in Minneapolis. After school, he served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in action. Howard moved to Aspen in 1972, and for the past 14 years worked with Mountain Management of Aspen, overseeing its extensive commercial properties.Kat and Howard married in 1987 and Gus was born in 1993. Howard became an active participant in the Aspen and Basalt communities – as a member of the Aspen Elks Lodge #224, chair of the Lodge Veterans Committee and volunteer with the annual Winter Sports Clinic for disabled veterans from around the country. He also derived great joy through involvement in programs with the schools. He was the ultimate fan and cheerleader for his son’s sports teams, especially baseball.

Howard walked through the world as a positive life force, radiating energy and friendship for all. He put family and friends first – always willing to lend a hand, a warm remark, caring, and compassion. His sense of humor, constant smile, and ability to extend a daily greeting to everyone who passed his way were welcomed far and wide. His indomitable spirit and generous nature will live on in the many who loved him.

A celebration of Howard’s life will take place from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at the Aspen Elks Lodge, 510 E. Hyman Ave.The Gus Berg College Scholarship Fund has been established at Alpine Bank in Howard’s memory. Contributions may be made at any Colorado branch by phone or in person.
