How to improve Soupsköl

Dear Editor:

I have been in the restaurant business for more than seven years here in Aspen and have some suggestions for the organizers of the Soupsköl event that takes place every year:

First, I think a fee should be imposed for patrons of Soupsköl that could benefit a charity or cause rather than it being completely free. Say $10 per person. A great cause that comes to mind is raising money for pancreatic cancer research to honor the original founder of Soupsköl, Reggie Barbour. I believe raising money for a good cause would lend itself to the celebratory nature of Soupsköl/Wintersköl. There does seem to always be a contingent of people that seem to love free stuff, and I suspect those people would grumble if a such a fee were imposed. But then again, who really needs those people anyway?

Second, I think it would be to everyone’s benefit to change the time schedule for Soupsköl. How about making it 3:30-5:30 p.m.? There is a tremendous cost and effort that all the local restaurants endure every year to make this event successful. The restaurants do this knowing that they are cannibalizing a busy Saturday night of business for themselves (not mention their neighbor restaurants). And let’s face it, every dollar of business is important for the vitality of restaurants in Aspen.

If the time schedule were changed it would allow patrons of Soupsköl to still make reservations and make a whole afternoon to evening out of it. Maybe have the awards ceremony and a (free) local band play before the torch skiers come out, and then fireworks. Wrap everything up by 6:30 p.m.
