How much to park at Vail?
Aspen, CO Colorado
VAIL, Colo. ” Skiing at Vail can be pricey, but $110 for parking is a bit unusual.
Julie Moore of Edwards said her husband’s credit card was charged 12 times for a single day of parking in mid-December.
“Eleven total charges in addition to the (original) nine dollars,” Moore said.
The extra 11 charges showed up in January, weeks after the original charge, she said.
A computer glitch at the Vail Village and Lionshead parking garages has caused multiple charges for single transactions over the last week. The town of Vail, which runs the garages, said it’s working to refund all of the overcharged parkers.
The glitch seems to have affected hundreds of people. The town said it got 50 calls starting Jan. 7 about the excess charges.
Overcharged people will be refunded for the extra charges, as well as the original charge, the town said. The refunds should appear on credit card statements within the next few days, said Judy Camp, the town’s finance director.
“The town is sincerely sorry that this has happened to some of our customers, and we hope that we have made it right by putting through credits as quickly as possible,” Camp said.
About 2,200 charges were refunded, Camp said. Most people were charged about 12 to 14 times, she said.
“I would say, for the most part, like anything else there’s a handful of people who are pretty irate and unhappy,” Camp said. “But the majority of people have been very understanding.”
A new payment system was installed at the parking garages before this ski season. The town is now bypassing that system, Camp said.
“We’re investigating going back to the system that we used last year,” Camp said.
The recent episode isn’t the only time this year parkers were overcharged. Some customers were double-charged in December, Camp said. But that was the result of a human error, said Vail Public Works Director Greg Hall.
Moore contacted the town, which told her the charges would be refunded, she said.
“They were pretty cool about it,” she added.
But other overcharged parkers might not have even checked their credit-card statements yet, Moore said.
I wondered if some people don’t even know this happened to them,” she said.
