How much espresso?

Dear Editor:(Re: “The buzz on Aspen’s coffee scene,” Sept. 9)I suppose most coffee drinkers drink the regular brewed stuff but, to some of us, coffee equals espresso. We never liked coffee until we started going to Europe with the Cleveland Orchestra and tasted coffee there, where one must special-order “American coffee” to get the version most people favor in the U.S. This was long before the advent of Starbucks – not that we frequent that chain – wherever we go, we look for the independent local places, both on principle (supporting their existence and appreciating their uniqueness) and preference (Starbucks burns their beans).Other than American coffee, your article compares only lattes, albeit a delicious drink but one that more resembles a warm milkshake when compared to, e.g., a macchiato.Aside from awakening America to the concept of stronger, better coffee, Starbucks instigated the espresso craze in the States. I’d be curious to know the volume of espresso drinks vs. regular coffee ordered in the places which feature a real espresso machine.Martha AaronsAspen
