Housing lottery to be rerun

Aspen Times Staff Report

Ninety-two locals vying for three one-bedroom units at the Hallam Street Condominiums will have a second shot on Tuesday.

Housing Authority officials were forced to declare invalid a lottery conducted Thursday for the units because of a computer program problem that left 25 participants out of the lottery.

The lottery for the one-bedroom units will be rerun at noon on Tuesday.

The Housing Authority has begun a new system of awarding affordable housing units that is weighted toward longtime locals. The longer a participant has lived and worked here, the more “chances” he or she is given in a housing lottery.

The demand for the Hallam Street Condos (also known as the Red House) overwhelmed the new computer program for housing lotteries. Among the 92 entrants, there were 538 chances in the mix, with each person receiving five to nine chances to win, depending on his or her priority level.

“The computer program somehow couldn’t handle so many chances in the system and ran out of slots,” explained Cindy Christensen of the Housing Authority.

As a result, 25 people were left out of the lottery.

The lotteries conducted last week for the two- and three-bedroom units at the Red House were valid and those winners will stand. There were 58 people in the drawing for the one two-bedroom unit and 21 locals competing for the single three-bedroom condo up for sale.
