Housing director chosen

A decision has been made about who will be the next housing director for Aspen and Pitkin County, an official said Monday.

“We’ve made the selection,” said Aspen/Pitkin County Housing Authority board member Jackie Kasabach. “We’ll make an announcement once we hear back about the offer.”

Kasabach declined to name the candidate who is being offered the job.

Speculation has been high about the successor to former Housing Director Dave Tolen, who announced his resignation earlier this summer. The Housing Authority reportedly received nearly two-dozen applications for the post.

The field of candidates had been narrowed down to three, contrary to a news report that indicated the final cut was down to two names.

“It was not narrowed down to two, it was three,” said Kasabach. Assistant Housing Director Mary Roberts, who is acting as interim executive director, has been generally considered the front-runner for the job.

One man who reportedly also was in the final running for the job – city assets manager Ed Sadler – said that as of late Monday afternoon he had not heard anything from the housing office.

“You know more than I do,” said Sadler, adding that if it turned out to be true that he is not to be offered the job, it is “not a big deal.

“I’m not sure it particularly bothers me,” Sadler said. “I’m happy doing what I’m doing. It [the job opening] got a lot of attention … and I thought if they wanted something different, they might offer it to me.”

He said City Manager Amy Margerum was “definitely aware that I’d applied for it, since she was on the interview committee.”

Local resident Phil Byrne was also one of the final candidates, according to Kasabach, but he declined to either confirm or deny that he had applied for the job.

But, he said, he had not received any calls from the housing office about anything.
