‘Housing council’ proposed in Eagle Co.

EDWARDS ” Local officials and business people have recommended the creation of a nonprofit, countywide “housing council” that would assist and advise local governments.

A countywide “blue ribbon” panel made the recommendation Thursday after studying worker housing over the last six months.

The group would be funded by towns and the county ” and maybe private businesses. It would cost up to $500,000 a year by 2009, according to the plan.

Members of the committee said the group would provide “tools” to encourage the creation of employee housing as well as data to determine the scope of the worker-housing need.

“It itself can’t produce a single house,” said Avon Mayor Ron Wolfe.

The group would not be a housing authority, but some suggested it could be a first step toward a group that could get more money in other ways.

“This is the perfect shell for some next funding step,” said County Commissioner Peter Runyon.
