House party!

To mark their birthdays last week, Shawn O’Connor of Carbondale and Amy Thomas of Missouri Heights had a downvalley house party. O’Connor and his roommates pushed back the furniture and cleared out the fridge in anticipation of friends and neighbors who descended on their pad, ready to party.

Tiki torches ringed the backyard, a central gathering spot on the hot summer night. A trio of musicians known as Half Cab played to a satisfied crowd – most of whom stood cross-armed, drink in hand, nodding their heads in approval.

Friends took turns tending to the grill – cooking barbecue chicken, hot dogs and other surprise meats. Reminiscent of a college rager, the birthday bash was a definitive rite of passage for both guests of honor. Thomas turned 30 alongside O’Connor, who celebrated his 29th.
