Aspen Valley Hospital has retained legal counsel in an effort to recoup money from its former auditing company after the firm failed to pick up on major financial mistakes within the hospital, AVHs treasurer confirmed in a public board meeting Monday.Up until the hospital terminated its contract in April, BK & D, a Colorado Springs-based auditing firm, had performed annual checks of the hospitals books. Those checks failed to uncover major problems in the institutions billing system that forced AVH to write off nearly $12 million in uncollected bills and report a loss last year of $7.5 million. The treasurer, John Jellinek, said in yesterdays meeting that the hospital has hired legal specialists to negotiate compensation from the auditors insurers. He refused to elaborate further. This is a very sensitive issue, he said. But I can say we are currently looking into a monetary settlement with the old firm.Eben Harrells e-mail address is
