Honesty pays off for local girl

Aspen Times Staff Report

Ten-year-old Elizabeth Whipple’s good deed finally paid off.

More than two months ago, the Aspen Elementary School fifth-grader was strolling the downtown malls with her mom and sister when she chanced upon $45 in cash.

“She was like, `Look, MONEY!’ ” recalled Elizabeth’s mother Lynne. “We walked into some of the nearby stores to see if anybody had lost money, and then she thought it was best to bring it to the police station and we did.”

With any lost valuables turned in to authorities, the finder must wait a certain period of time before claiming it, assuming the rightful owner doesn’t.

In Elizabeth Whipple’s case, she waited 64 days before collecting her prize Monday.

“To a ten-year-old, $45 was so much money,” Lynne said. “She had been asking me every day, `Is it time yet? Is it time yet?’ “

“The police took her into the big safe, took the money out of an evidence bag and the whole nine yards,” Lynne said. “They were really great about it; they made her feel like she did the right thing.”

As for the proceeds from her good fortune, Elizabeth isn’t going to spend it all at once.

“I’m proud of myself,” she said. “I’ll probably start a savings account; my sisters have ’em, so now I can start one.”

“She’s keeping the evidence bag too,” Lynne added. “She thinks it’s pretty cool.”
