Home rule right

Dear Editor:This election season, Eagle County residents of the Roaring Fork Valley have a chance to explore change in their county government. Voting in favor of Referendum 1A means you support the possibility of home rule in Eagle County’s future. If passed, 1A will establish a Home Rule Charter Commission whose task will be to craft a charter. Voters then can weigh in on the proposed charter through a vote next year. For me, the bright light of home rule is that it would establish direct representation of the Roaring Fork side of the county on the board of commissioners. Right now, given the greater county size and population within the Eagle Valley, it is difficult to elect an Eagle County commissioner from the Roaring Fork Valley. Our voices can get lost in the shuffle, even though the two valleys have distinctly different issues, demographics and landscapes. Please vote “yes” on 1A, and select experienced voices from the Roaring Fork Valley, including Robert Schultz and Jacque Whitsitt, to the Home Rule Charter Commission. Kristine CrandallBasalt
