Home-field advantage

Dear Editor:During my career as a professional freeskier, I have traveled the world, skied the best mountains, met amazing people, and lived a pretty good life. But I am always humbled when I return to this valley for the X Games. For the past four years, you have given me your unwavering support, from the time I won my first medals, to when I crashed on live television, to this last week where I podiumed with a third-place performance. I can’t tell you how much it means to me to compete on an international stage, right here in my home valley, where I grew up.Sitting at the top of the halfpipe, there are a lot of things running through an athlete’s mind. There is a tremendous amount of pressure put upon us to do well, to perform when need be. But when I get to the bottom, and I hear the loudest and most jubilant cheers of the night, no matter how I’ve performed, it’s what makes doing what I do worth it. The fact that I managed to do well this year, was just a cherry on top of a great weekend, here in Aspen.Again, thank you to everyone who keeps coming out and supporting me. It means the world to me, and I will see you again next year.Peter OlenickCarbondale
